Jim & Inez Willoughby
Jim and I had been in Charlotte a little over six months, having moved from the DC area. We noticed several familiar Dance Studios around town. We were deep into Choral Singing in No. VA,, but decided to investigate dancing in Charlotte. We both had danced growing up and continued to enjoy it together. One day we received a "cold call" from a very nice lady calling to tell us about a dance studio called Dance Club International. We learned later that she was in their Call Center in Kansas City. We were intrigued, so we decided to accept her offer and that was the beginning of our journey with Ted Sowder. He eventually separated from Dance Club Int'l and became American Ballroom Dance Club. We are beginning our 16th year with him. After studying with a lot of coaches over the years and also being exposed to other teachers, we consider Ted to be the consummate dance instructor. He has an ability to bring the reality of the dance movement to an understanding that can be utilized whether one is learning for social enjoyment or for competitive knowledge. We would refer him to anyone who would like to move to the beat of the music, or to the heart. Unlike many ballroom teachers, Ted is an excellent teacher of men. He understands the special things they need to know to control and manage the dance experience and strengthen their confidence at the same time. After all, they are the leaders! Ted Sowder is a terrific ballroom dance instructor especially when it comes to teaching men. He is very patient, knowledgeable and thorough in his instruction. He teaches American style dancing which is great for all social events. My husband and I have studied with him for 9 years. I consider him to be the best teacher in the region.
Other than square dancing in eighth grade gym class, I had never tried learning any partner dancing until my first lesson with Ted. It amazed me how easy it was to follow the simple directions he gave me, so I immediately felt like I was gliding across the floor. From that point on, I have been devoted to learning all styles of ballroom dance. When someone asks which is my favorite dance, I can honestly say whichever one I'm doing right then.
I enjoy dancing weekly with other students at studio classes and practice sessions, and at other special occasions. Stepping on the dance floor quickly sends stresses from work far away.
It's clear to see that Ted and Kim thoroughly enjoy teaching beginning students as much as more experienced ones. Their encouragement helps them to become confident to dance in social settings.

My wife and I had never taken ballroom dancing before. We attended a "guest night" and couldn't wait to try out his "free private lesson" . It was great. Ted has this ability to teach and correct your dancing without saying "that was wrong". That may not make sense but the way he woukd correct you was such that you always felt good about the experience. He made all the different dances attainable and we were able to learn the basics of most of the dances in months as opposed to years. Ted also provides a way for you to practice your newly learned dance steps by offering a "Party" every weekend. Afterall, you can learn how to dance but then you need to " use it or lose it". Here it is 7 years later and we are still dancing. By the way, we are not competitive dancers., just social dancers that enjoy dancing to wonderful music. Can't go wrong trying it, after all, the first lesson is free !
